This course is designed to provide participants with the skills for assisting persons affect by a critical incident or traumatic event. The course consists of two modules, module 1 deals with working on a 1-2-1 basis with individuals and modules 2 teaches the skills required for working with groups.
MODULE 1 – INDIVIDUAL CRISIS INTERVENTION AND PEER SUPPORT
Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support is designed to teach participants the fundamentals of, and a specific protocol for, one-on-one crisis intervention. These courses are designed for those in the fields of Business & Industry, Disaster Response, Education, Emergency Services, Employee Assistance, Healthcare, Mental Health, Spiritual Care, and Traumatic Stress.
Crisis Intervention is NOT psychotherapy; rather, it is a specialised acute emergency mental health intervention which requires specialised training. As physical first aid is to surgery, crisis intervention is to psychotherapy. Thus, crisis intervention is sometimes called “psychological or emotional first aid”.
• Understand the Concept of CISM as a comprehensive crisis intervention programme.
• Understand the role that individual crisis intervention plays in a comprehensive CISM program.
• Understand Basic terms and concepts relevant to the study of crisis, traumatic stress, and crisis intervention.
• Be able to use crisis communication techniques.
• Understand Psychological reactions to crisis and trauma, including common psycho-pathological conditions.
• Understand the SAFER protocol for individual crisis intervention and its role in comprehensive CISM.
• Become Practiced in the use of the SAFER protocol.
• Be aware of Common problems encountered while working with individuals in crisis.
MODULE 2 – GROUP CRISIS INTERVENTION AND PEER SUPPORT
Group Crisis Intervention is designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, the Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilisations, defusings, and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

• Increased awareness of key terms and concepts relevant to the practice of crisis intervention and disaster mental health intervention.
• Familiarisation with relevant research findings and recommendations for practice.
• Understand the nature and importance of incident assessment and strategic intervention planning.
• Understand the nature of the “resistance, resilience, recovery” continuum and the role of the integrated, multi – component Critical Incident Stress Management system (CISM).
• Familiarisation with large group crisis interventions:
2. Crisis Management Briefings (CMB).
• Familiarisation with risks of adverse outcome associated with crisis intervention and how to reduce those risks.
• Familiarisation with small group crisis interventions:
2. Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)
3. Small Group Crisis Management Briefing (sCMB)
• Be practiced large and small group crisis interventions by means of exercises.
• Be practiced specifically the small group Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD).

Training Cancellation Policy: Training courses which are cancelled over 7 days in advance of scheduled training date shall incur no cancellation fee. Training courses which are cancelled within 7 days of scheduled training date shall incur a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the cost. Registrants who fail to attend training will be charged 100% of the full fee.
