Integrity Boot Camp

DATE: May 2, 2023 - June 30, 2023

TIME: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

VENUE: Online, Online, Online

Ethical business makes business sense. There are many ways to illustrate this. If companies can prevent unethical behaviour such as bribery and corruption, the financial bottom line will benefit. The risks of fines and litigation are reduced. Employees who act with integrity and who experience a culture that supports ethical behaviour will be more loyal and more productive.

The Integrity Boot Camp will help companies of any size to achieve the following objectives: to better understand ethical risks, to gain insight into the ethical culture of the company and to improve ethical decision-making skills of employees.

Over the course of six weeks, participating companies will experience two interventions:

  • All employees will be asked to complete a confidential ethical risk and culture assessment (TRACETM); and
  • All employees will be invited to respond to a series of ethical dilemmas (e-valuationTM) – they will receive feedback on their own choices as well as the choices their colleagues make.

The programme was developed by Dr Daniel Malan of Trinity Business School. He is a former co-chair of the Business 20 (B20) Integrity and Compliance Task Force and has worked as an ethics consultant for more than 20 years.  The programme is offered in his private capacity and is based on his products and a proprietary ABCD framework, which focuses on organisational integrity in terms of Assessment, Behaviour, Compliance and Disclosure.

Tracking Risks Associated with Compliance and Ethics (TRACETM) is a confidential online survey that measures employee perceptions about the frequency of misconduct, the levels of compliance and the general ethical culture in an organization.

TRACETM measures risks in the following areas:

  • Questionable workplace behaviour, e.g. deceptive sales or marketing practices, excessive private use of company assets, unauthorized absence from work, violating internet or travel policies, etc.
  • Specific behaviour that constitutes conflicts of interest, e.g. accepting inappropriate gifts or hospitality, being related to a supplier, having a second job without proper authorization or disclosure, etc.
  • Behaviour prohibited by law, e.g. accounting fraud, insider trading, procurement or tender fraud, etc.
  • Perceptions about company culture, e.g. familiarity with company values, effective ethical leadership, trust and accountability, company reputation, etc

e-valuation™ is an online ethics training tool aimed specifically, but not exclusively, at middle and senior management of companies. It uses e-mail as a training interface, thus enabling trainees to complete the programme in their own time. The aim of e-valuationTM is to help employees to deal with ethical dilemmas – it sharpens ethical decision-making skills but does not provide ready-made answers to complex ethical questions.

Participants receive a weekly e-mail with a brief description of an ethical dilemma. They are required to study the dilemma and vote online to indicate which response they believe to be the most appropriate. Each week they receive brief feedback on their choices, as well as a summary of the choices made by their colleagues. Participants need to respond to 75% of the dilemmas to complete the course, after which they receive a certificate of completion. It is important to note that all responses are confidential – the company will never get access to the responses of any particular individual.
